The History of TBS

TBS is short for Turner Broadcasting System. Deriving its name from media mogul Ted Turner, the network first hit the airwaves in 1976. Turner got the idea for TBS when he realized how straight-laced and conventional so many broadcast networks were. In Turner’s mind, TBS would be the place where a diverse range of programming could thrive. Nearly 50 years after TBS originated, it’s safe to say Turner’s vision came true.
The network originated as a superstation, meaning it was a local station distributed nationally through cable and satellite systems. WGN is one such example of a modern superstation. By the ‘90s, TBS was seen as a popular source for a unique mix of classic movies, live sporting events, and alternative original programming. With this in mind, TBS doesn’t seem to have changed much since then.
In the years since Warner Bros. Discovery took over, TBS has quietly evolved. This is a direct result of the new owners’ relentless budget cuts. The network has all but cut out its once-expansive original programming lineup (save for a handful of stragglers likely on the chopping block in the near future). Today, you’re more likely to find a classic sitcom rerun or a recent blockbuster movie than an original TBS production.

TBS Programming
No thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s rigorous belt-tightening in recent years, TBS programming looks a lot different from what it did in years past. The network has been all but stripped of its original programming, leaving very few scripted or unscripted programs on its current slate. And, creating lots more room for movies and syndicated content in its wake. Nevertheless, TBS has plenty to offer for movie and TV lovers of all types. Here’s what you might find on a typical programming block.
Scripted
As far as scripted original programming goes on TBS, Miracle Workers is the only live-action show that fits the bill. It’s an anthology comedy series starring Daniel Radcliffe, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Steve Buscemi, with each season following increasingly absurd scenarios throughout time.
TBS also has new episodes of American Dad! on its network, which it shares with sister station Cartoon Network’s programming block Adult Swim. Every other scripted series you see on the network — live-action or animated — is acquired syndicated programming.
Unscripted
While at one point quite extensive, TBS’s unscripted offerings have all but dwindled down to nothing as of late. Game shows The Cube and Wipeout are still around and supposedly in production, but only the former has aired new episodes recently. Wipeout may have been quietly canned.
AEW All Access aired new episodes on TBS as recently as the summer of 2023, but future seasons will air on Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service Max. That leaves just I Survived Bear Grylls as the only other original unscripted program currently airing.
Syndicated
Of all these different types of programming, syndicated broadcasts are definitely TBS’s strong suit. Family Matters, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, George Lopez, Young Sheldon, and Bob’s Burgers all air on a near-constant basis during the day and overnight.
The channel also syndicates Impractical Jokers episodes from sister station TruTV as well as old episodes of Wipeout from its original run on ABC. These syndicated broadcasts are mostly all compressed, meaning parts are sped up or removed to make room for longer ad breaks.
Sports
TBS is also home to plenty of sports programming. Depending on the time of year, you’re likely to see baseball, college basketball, esports, and even hockey playoff games and professional wrestling matches. It’s an eclectic mix, but isn’t that TBS in a nutshell?
Movies
Lastly, TBS fills gaps in its programming schedule with blockbuster action movies and comedies from the last 20-30 years or so. It’s rare to see something older than that on the network, but it does happen on occasion. The Back to the Future trilogy played not too long ago, for instance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is TBS?
TBS is short for Turner Broadcasting System (even though Warner Bros. Discovery recently took ownership of Turner). This television station offers an eclectic mix of sitcoms, movies, and original comedies. TBS is known best for its diverse range of programming that caters to comedy-loving viewers.
Why can't I find TBS on my TV?
The exact channel number for TBS will vary depending on your cable provider and your specific location in the United States. More often than not, you can find TBS in the basic channel lineup somewhere in the 20s-40s. If you don’t see it there, check out your local guide or contact your provider for an answer catered to your region.
What does TBS play?
TBS broadcasts a mix of original and syndicated content. It has long been the home for Friends reruns, with other contemporary sitcoms such as The Big Bang Theory or 2 Broke Girls joining the lineup in recent years. The station also plays blockbuster action movies and comedies from the last few decades. It even has a few original series of its own, though not nearly as many as it used to. Don’t forget live sports, too.
Does TBS still make original shows?
The only original live-action scripted show left on TBS’s roster is Miracle Workers. While the network used to be home to quite a few original comedies, it has since made rigorous cuts in line with Warner Bros. Discovery’s larger cost-cutting measures throughout its catalog of networks. Wipeout and The Cube are two other TBS originals that remain on the lineup, but their future is equally uncertain.
Why are Friends episodes different on TBS?
If you’re watching a syndicated sitcom on TBS and notice it looks or feels different from how you remember it, it’s because TBS does what’s known as compression: shortening broadcasts by speeding up parts or cutting them out entirely to save time for more advertisements. This could mean some parts are played faster, while other parts get cut completely.
