To help you gain clarity, we spoke with four career coaches to get their top advice. Here‘s your step-by-step guide to defining your unique long-term career aspirations.
First, Understand What Career Goals Are
Put simply, career goals are the milestones you hope to achieve in your professional life, both in the short-term and long-term. While your personal goals might include starting a family or buying a house, your career goals are focused specifically on your work aspirations.
"Your long-term career goals are your vision for your professional future," explains Heidi Siegal Kogon, Founder and Career Coach at Kogon Coaching. "It‘s the ‘north star‘ that guides your career decisions and keeps you motivated."
Some common examples of long-term career goals include:
- Becoming an executive at your company
- Starting your own business
- Being recognized as an expert or thought leader in your field
- Making a career change into a new industry
- Achieving a certain salary level
In contrast, short-term career goals are the stepping stones that will help you reach those bigger aspirations. They tend to be achievable in a few months to a few years. Some examples of short-term goals include:
- Getting a promotion or raise
- Developing a new skill
- Expanding your professional network
- Leading a big project or initiative
- Improving your performance metrics
"Your short-term goals should align with and bring you closer to your long-term vision," advises Nicole Palidwor, a certified career coach and resumé specialist at Ama La Vida.
Why Defining Your Long-term Career Goals Matters
Taking the time to step back and think about your long-term career aims is vital for a few key reasons:

"Long-term career visions don‘t just happen by accident or fall into your lap," notes Kogon. "You have to proactively define them for yourself and then make a plan to achieve them intentionally."
A 5-Step Process to Discover Your Long-term Career Goals
While there‘s no magic formula, you can follow this step-by-step reflection process to gain clarity on your ideal career path:
1. Assess your values and interests
"The first step is to focus inward and reflect on what matters most to you," advises Senior Director of Student Affairs for Penn State University and career development strategist Ashley A. Adams, PhD.
She suggests asking yourself:
- What do I care about?
- What inspires and motivates me?
- What are my core values?
"Values serve as a compass and should guide all your decisions, particularly in your career," Adams notes.
For example, if you highly value:
- Work-life balance, you may seek out roles with flexible schedules and companies that emphasize employee wellbeing.
- Creativity, you might be drawn to careers in design, marketing, entrepreneurship, or the arts.
- Helping others, you could explore healthcare, teaching, counseling, or non-profit paths.
- Status and income, you may pursue qualifications and titles that boost your earning power and professional recognition.
- Innovation, fast-paced environments like startups and tech companies could be a great fit.
- Stability, you might prefer established corporations, government organizations, or tenured academic positions.
Marcy Williams, Founder of Coach Marcy Life Coaching Services, recommends a simple but powerful exercise: "Imagine you get the Google Alert: ‘Just In: [Your Name]…‘ What would the alert say in your wildest dreams? Does it highlight a role, an impact you‘ve made, a feeling? Capture that."
2. Define your strengths and ideal work environment
Next, Adams recommends examining your professional strengths and weaknesses:
- What skills and talents do I possess?
- What types of tasks energize me vs. drain me?
- When and where do I do my best work?
"Understanding what conditions enable you to thrive and make your greatest impact can guide you toward the right roles, industries, and work environments for you," Adams explains.
Kogon suggests reflecting on your past experiences to identify patterns:
- What projects or accomplishments am I most proud of?
- When have I felt most fulfilled and engaged in my work?
You can also gather outside input by asking trusted colleagues and mentors for feedback on your strengths. Many coaches also recommend personality assessments like the CliftonStrengths, 16Personalities, or Enneagram to gain self-awareness.
Palidwor adds, "It‘s also important to examine your lifestyle priorities and ideal work environment. Do you prefer highly structured or more autonomous work? Do you need flexible hours or the ability to work remotely? Identifying these factors will help you find alignment."
3. Define your personal mission statement
Armed with insights about your values, interests, strengths, and ideal environment, your next step is to craft a career mission statement. This is 1-3 sentences encapsulating your long-term aims.
"Your mission statement should reflect the essence of who you are and what you want to achieve," says Williams. "It‘s a touchstone you can return to for guidance and motivation throughout your career journey."
Some example career mission statements:
- "To leverage my leadership and communication skills to make a meaningful impact on workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion."
- "To build innovative products that solve major global challenges and leave a lasting positive impact."
- "To use my analytical and problem-solving abilities to drive data-informed decisions that boost business performance."
- "To enhance quality of life for individuals and communities through breakthroughs in biomedical research."
- "To tell powerful stories that inform, inspire, and spark positive social change through journalism."
4. Envision your ideal future state
Williams recommends projecting yourself into the future: "Close your eyes and visualize where you want to be in 5 years. What does career success look and feel like for you? Be as specific and vivid as possible."
She suggests noting details like:
- What is your job title and role?
- What company or industry are you working in?
- What skills and expertise have you developed?
- What types of projects are you leading?
- How are you making an impact?
- What is your lifestyle like?
Sho Dewan, CEO of Workhap and Top Voices LinkedIn Career Coach, also emphasizes the power of visualization.
"Form a clear mental picture of your future self and career," he says. "Engage all your senses. Imagine how you‘ll introduce yourself at industry events. Picture your business card or LinkedIn profile. Feel the emotions of achieving your goals. Creating that positive emotional charge will fuel your motivation and persistence."
5. Set long-term benchmarks & short-term action steps
Finally, it‘s time to break your big-picture vision down into long-term milestones and short-term objectives.
"Work backwards from your 5-year goal to set benchmarks for 3 years, 1 year, and 6 months from now," Palidwor suggests. "Identify the skills, experiences, and accomplishments you‘ll need to reach at each stage."
Some examples of long-term benchmarks:
- Earn an MBA or other advanced degree
- Gain management experience leading a team
- Develop expertise in a certain domain
- Build a strong professional network in your target industry
- Secure a promotion to a specific title
Then, translate those benchmarks into a tactical 6-12 month plan:
- Sign up for a course or certification program
- Attend an industry conference or event
- Find a mentor in your ideal career path
- Volunteer for a stretch project at work
- Update your resume and LinkedIn to reflect your goals
"Be sure your short-term objectives are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound," Palidwor advises. "Create space in your schedule to work on them consistently and track your progress."
Remember, this is not a "one-and-done" exercise. Schedule regular check-ins with yourself to revisit your mission, goals, and plan.
"Your goals and path may shift as you grow and your priorities evolve," says Kogon. "Treat your career like a garden you continuously tend. Prune and pivot as needed."
