How to Have a Super Productive Weekend: 12 Helpful Tips
Be honest: how many weekends have you frittered away binging Netflix, scrolling social media or bouncing from one lazy activity to the next, only to start Monday feeling just as behind and burned out as you did on Friday?
If you‘re like most people, the answer is too many. In fact, a recent survey found the average person considers 69% of their weekend "wasted" on unproductive activities. Almost a third said they routinely squander the whole weekend and start the week feeling unprepared.
It‘s a common trap—after the stress and structure of the workweek, your weekend arrives and you just want to shut off your brain and do nothing. But here‘s the thing: how you spend your Saturdays and Sundays has a massive ripple effect on your productivity, wellbeing and success the other five days of the week.
When you fritter away the weekend, you start the new week in reactive mode, scrambling to catch up and not be overwhelmed. But when you use the weekend intentionally, you can recharge your batteries, get a jumpstart on important work, and roll into Monday feeling energized, inspired and ahead of the game.
Now, this doesn‘t mean you have to spend the entire weekend working or being a productivity machine. The goal of a productive weekend is balance—a mix of rest and relaxation, time for yourself, time for loved ones, and progress on your goals and priorities. It‘s about making the most of your 48 hours of freedom so that you can thrive the other 120 hours of the week.
Ready to have your most productive weekends ever? Here are 12 tips to make it happen:
1. Set an Intention
First things first: get clear on what a productive weekend looks like for you. At the start of the weekend (or even better, the Friday before), take a few minutes to set an intention. Ask yourself:
- How do I want to feel at the end of this weekend?
- What would make me feel happiest and most fulfilled?
- What do I need to do to set myself up for a successful week?
For example, your intention might be to feel rested and recharged so you can think creatively at work. Or to make meaningful progress on your side business. Or to have quality time with your kids so you can focus at the office guilt-free. There‘s no right or wrong answer, only what matters most to you.
Once you have your intention, write it down and put it somewhere you‘ll see it throughout the weekend. This simple act will help you stay focused and make decisions that align with your goals.
2. Make a (Short) To-Do List
Now that you know your intention, brainstorm a short list of to-dos that will help you achieve it. The key word is short. Overplanning is the enemy of a productive weekend.
I recommend choosing no more than 3-5 priority tasks—any more than that and you‘ll likely feel overwhelmed and set yourself up for disappointment. Remember, you still want plenty of space for rest and spontaneity.
Focus on tasks that will make the biggest impact on your week, like getting ahead on a work project, meal prepping lunches, or having a difficult conversation with your partner. Don‘t waste precious weekend time on mundane chores that can wait or be delegated (more on that later).
Once you have your list, estimate how much time each task will take and slot them into your weekend, being realistic about your other commitments. It‘s not a rigid schedule, just a flexible roadmap to keep you on track.
3. Prep for the Week Ahead
One of the best investments you can make on the weekend is getting yourself set up for a smooth, successful week. Taking a few minutes to look ahead and prepare will save you tons of time and stress in the coming days. Some ideas:
- Review your calendar and to-do list for the week ahead
- Decide on your top goals and priorities for the week
- Do laundry and set out your outfits for the week
- Meal plan and grocery shop
- Prep some meals and snacks in advance
- Tidy your workspace and check office supplies
- Fill up your car with gas
- Pack your gym bag and work bag
When Monday rolls around, you‘ll be able to dive right in without wasting time or energy getting organized. Even better, you‘ll sleep like a baby on Sunday night knowing you‘re ready to rock the week ahead.
4. Tackle a Passion Project
Your weekends are precious time to explore your interests outside of work and family responsibilities. Make space to dive into a hobby or passion project that lights you up, whether that‘s learning to paint, writing a novel, tinkering with your car or developing an app.
Studies show that engaging in creative activities you enjoy can reduce stress and anxiety, boost your mood and self-esteem, and improve problem-solving skills and focus. Passion projects give you something to look forward to and make your weekends feel fun and fulfilling.
If you‘re not sure where to start, brainstorm activities you loved as a child or skills you‘ve always wanted to learn. Take a class, join a club or enlist a friend to learn alongside you. Even an hour or two invested in your passion will leave you energized and inspired for the week ahead.
5. Learn Something New
In today‘s fast-paced world, continuous learning is essential to stay relevant and competitive. Use your weekends to sharpen your skill set.
Read a nonfiction book. Watch a TED talk. Listen to a podcast. Take an online course. Attend a workshop or conference. Find a mentor. The more you learn, the more ideas and opportunities will come your way.
Some high-value skills to focus on:
- Communication (writing, public speaking, storytelling)
- Digital skills (coding, data analysis, social media marketing)
- Leadership and management
- Sales and negotiation
- Emotional intelligence
- A new language
Aim to block out at least an hour of learning time each weekend. Track your progress and celebrate your new knowledge. A commitment to growth will pay huge dividends in your career and life.
6. Schedule Quality Time
Weekends are meant for recharging your batteries and nurturing your most important relationships. Carve out quality time with loved ones.
If you‘re married, have a date night or tackle a project together. If you have kids, plan a fun family outing or one-on-one time with each child. Call your parents or siblings. Have a leisurely meal with friends. Join a community group or sports team.
The social connection and support will fill your cup and give you the emotional reserves to handle stress in the week ahead. Plus, people with strong relationships tend to be happier, healthier and even more productive at work.
Just be sure to block the time in advance and treat it as non-negotiable. It‘s all too easy for chores and errands to steal family/friend time if you‘re not intentional.
7. Move Your Body
Exercise is a miracle drug for your physical health, mental clarity and productivity. Commit to moving your body for at least 30 minutes each day of the weekend, whether it‘s hitting the gym, going for a hike, dancing, swimming or playing a sport.
The benefits are undeniable: regular exercise reduces stress and anxiety, sharpens focus and memory, boosts energy and mood, and even makes you more creative and productive at work. For example, one study found employees who exercised during the workday improved their time management, mental performance and ability to meet deadlines.
Your workout doesn‘t have to be intense or take a long time. Even a brisk walk in nature can clear your head and get your blood flowing. The key is to move every day until it becomes a non-negotiable habit. Your body and mind will thank you.
8. Declutter and Organize
Your environment has a huge impact on your mental state and ability to focus. A cluttered, chaotic space will leave you feeling stressed and scatterbrained. Taking time to declutter on the weekend can give you a sense of calm and control that carries into your week.
Start small: set a timer for 30 minutes and tackle one area, like your closet, pantry, garage or car. Get rid of anything you no longer use, need or love (donate or sell items in good condition). Then organize what‘s left in a logical way.
You can also use your decluttering time to set up systems that will make your life run more smoothly during the week, like an entryway organizer for keys/bags, a filing system for important papers, or a meal planning board.
The less time and energy you waste searching for lost items or making decisions, the more brainpower you‘ll have for important work and relationships. A tidy home equals a tidy mind.
9. Reflect and Reset
Your weekend is the perfect time to pause and ponder the bigger picture of your life and goals. Schedule 30 minutes of reflection time, maybe with a journal and cup of coffee in a peaceful spot.
Ask yourself questions like:
- What went well last week? What could I have done better?
- What are my top priorities and goals at the moment?
- What do I need to do to move closer to my goals?
- How do I want to feel next week?
- What am I grateful for right now?
Getting your thoughts and goals out of your head and onto paper will give you clarity and direction. You may have an aha moment about a problem you‘ve been grappling with or see a new opportunity you hadn‘t considered. At the very least, you‘ll identify small action steps you can take in the week ahead to make progress.
Make reflection a weekly ritual and watch your self-awareness and intentionality skyrocket. A Harvard Business School study found people who reflected performed 23% better on a test than those who didn‘t.
10. Volunteer
Spending time in service to others is one of the most rewarding ways to invest a few hours of your weekend. Research a local volunteer opportunity, like helping at a food bank, animal shelter or community cleanup.
Not only will it make a difference in the world, but volunteering has powerful benefits for you as well: reduced stress, a greater sense of purpose, new skills, an expanded network, and a boost in gratitude and happiness that spills into all areas of life.
Best of all, employers love to see volunteer experience on a resume—it demonstrates work ethic, character and commitment. One study found applicants who listed volunteering had a 27% better chance of getting hired.
So find a volunteer gig that aligns with your skills and interests, even if it‘s only once a month. The ripple effect on your community and career may surprise you.
11. Have a "Power Hour"
If you find yourself dreading your to-do list or procrastinating on important tasks, try a "Power Hour." It‘s a focused block of distraction-free time where you work as efficiently as possible to knock out a batch of tasks.
Here‘s how it works:
- Pick a day and time for your Power Hour (e.g. Saturday 10-11am).
- Write down all the nagging tasks you want to get done (errands, chores, admin work, etc).
- Set a timer for 60 minutes.
- Race against the clock to do as many tasks as you can until the timer goes off.
- Take a break, then start another 60-minute sprint if needed.
The time pressure and single-tasking can do wonders for your focus and efficiency. You may be amazed how much you can accomplish in a short burst of disciplined action. It‘s like a workout for your productivity muscles.
Power Hours are my secret weapon for powering through my least favorite to-dos so I can free up time and energy for more meaningful activities. Try it this weekend and prepare to crush your list.
12. Fill Your Inspiration Tank
Finally, treat your weekend as an opportunity to fill up on inspiration and motivation to fuel you through the days ahead. Make a list of activities that invigorate you and schedule them into your free time.
Maybe it‘s reading a juicy novel, watching a documentary, going to a museum, seeing live music, or trying a new restaurant. Maybe it‘s a spontaneous road trip or booking a future vacation. The key is to seek out new ideas and experiences that get you out of your routine and light a spark inside you.
When you have a full inspiration tank, you‘ll find it easier to approach your work with a sense of motivation, creativity and purpose. You never know when a weekend activity will lead to your next brilliant idea or aha moment.
So there you have it: a dozen ways to supercharge your weekends and set yourself up for a happier, more successful week ahead. Remember, a productive weekend is all about intentionality and balance.
Define what matters most to you, make a plan, then execute while still leaving room for rest and spontaneity. With a little discipline and a lot of self-care, you‘ll get the recharge you need to show up as your best self at work and home.
Here‘s to your most productive weekends yet!
