Anecdote Candles Review: The Brand That‘s Lighting Up Instagram

Hey there candle lovers! Today I want to dish about one of my latest obsessions: Anecdote Candles. If you haven‘t heard of this cheeky brand that‘s blowing up on social media, allow me to enlighten you.

What Are Anecdote Candles?

Anecdote is a candle company with a twist. Instead of your standard floral and fruit scents, each Anecdote candle is inspired by a funny anecdote or relatable experience. The names alone will make you LOL – there‘s "Adulting" that smells like "early nights and steady paychecks," "Quarter-Life Crisis" with notes of grapefruit and existential dread, and my personal fave, "Bottomless Mimosas." Because who doesn‘t want their house to smell like a boozy brunch?

But Anecdote Candles aren‘t just gimmicky – they‘re actually really high-quality. The candles are hand-poured in the USA using a natural coconut-soy wax blend and cotton wicks. And with 40-50 hour burn times, they‘ll last you way longer than your average mall candle.

Why Are They So Popular?

Anecdote has quickly become an "it" candle brand, especially among millennials. I think it‘s because the scents and marketing are just so dang relatable. In a sea of stuffy luxury candle brands, Anecdote feels fresh and fun. They totally get our generation‘s sense of humor and don‘t take themselves too seriously.

The brand has blown up on Instagram in particular, with over 100k followers and counting. It‘s not hard to see why – the candy-colored jars look perfect in any shelfie. Anecdote has also gotten shoutouts from major publications like Forbes, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, and more.

Putting Anecdote To The Test

Of course, I had to see what all the hype was about for myself. I ended up ordering a bunch of Anecdote‘s bestsellers (for research purposes, obviously) and I‘ve been burning them nonstop. Here are my thoughts:

Quarter-Life Crisis

This one really resonated with me as a twenty-something navigating the ups and downs of adulting. The grapefruit and mint scent is super energizing – perfect for those mornings when you need a boost to get out of bed. It‘s like the candle version of a motivational podcast.

Adulting

As someone who‘s still figuring out this whole "being a grown-up" thing, I appreciate this candle‘s aspirational vibes. With notes of fig and sandalwood, it makes me feel like I have my life together even when my laundry is overflowing. Baby steps, right?

Bottomless Mimosas

This is hands down my favorite Anecdote scent. It literally smells like a freshly poured mimosa, with notes of citrus and champagne. I‘ve been burning it every weekend and it instantly puts me in a brunching mood.

One thing that impressed me about all the Anecdote candles was how well they filled a room. The scent throw is amazing – I could smell them all the way from my bedroom. But they‘re not overpowering in that headache-inducing way. The aromas are fresh and natural, never artificial.

What Do The Reviews Say?

I‘m not the only one raving about Anecdote Candles. The proof is in the customer reviews. On the brand‘s website, almost all the scents have 5-star ratings and glowing testimonials. Here are a few highlights:

"I bought Comfort Zone as a gift for my best friend who‘s an introvert and she LOVED it! The packaging was so cute and the scent is really calming." – Sarah K.

"I‘m obsessed with Anecdote Candles! I have almost all of them at this point. They burn so evenly and the scents are unlike anything else." – Megan R.

"Mercury in Retrograde is my go-to when I‘m stressed. It really does help me chill out. And the candle lasts forever!" – Jenna P.

How Do They Compare To Other Candle Brands?

I know what you might be thinking – aren‘t these candles a bit pricey for something you literally burn? At $24 for an 8 oz jar, Anecdote Candles are definitely an investment. But when you compare the cost per burn time, they‘re actually quite reasonable. Here‘s how they stack up to some other popular candle brands:

Brand Size Price Burn Time Cost Per Hour
Anecdote Candles 8 oz $24 40-50 hrs $0.48-$0.60/hr
Capri Blue 8 oz $30 40 hrs $0.75/hr
Diptyque 6.5 oz $36 50-60 hrs $0.60-$0.72/hr
Le Labo 8.6 oz $75 50-60 hrs $1.25-$1.50/hr

As you can see, Anecdote Candles are a great value compared to other trendy brands. You get a longer burn time for your buck. And IMO, the scents are way more unique and memorable.

The Science of Scent

Anecdote‘s whole concept of linking scents with memories actually has a scientific basis. Our sense of smell is closely connected to the part of our brain that processes emotions and memories. That‘s why certain aromas can trigger such vivid flashbacks and feelings.

When you smell one of Anecdote‘s candles, it‘s not just about the individual notes – it‘s about the story and mood they evoke. The combo of scent and storytelling makes them so much more impactful than your average candle.

And BTW, if you want to prolong the storytelling experience, you can add a few drops of unscented oil to the wax once your candle is finished. Then you can reuse the empty jar as a cute cache pot or trinket holder! I‘ve been using my old Adulting vessel to store bobby pins and hair ties.

Tips For The Perfect Burn

To get the most out of your Anecdote Candles, here are a few burning tips I swear by:

  • Trim your wick. Before each burn, make sure your wick is trimmed to about 1/4 inch. This prevents the flame from getting too big and creating soot.
  • Let it melt. On the first burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar. This creates an even "burn memory" and prevents tunneling.
  • Mind your burn time. For most candle jars, the max burn time is 4 hours. Anecdote‘s 8 oz size can handle a little longer, but I still wouldn‘t go past 4-5 hours at a time.
  • Retire it gracefully. When only about 1/2 inch of wax remains, it‘s time to bid your candle adieu. Further burning can cause the jar to crack or shatter – not cute!

Where To Shop

By now I‘m sure I‘ve convinced you that you need an Anecdote Candle (or 5) in your life. You can shop the full collection on the brand‘s website, anecdotecandles.com.

Anecdote has also started popping up in trendy boutiques and national retailers like Nordstrom and Paper Source. Check their Store Locator to find a stockist near you!

In addition to jars, Anecdote offers most of their scents in mini tin form for $14 a pop. These make the perfect stocking stuffers or gift add-ons. Maybe I should start my holiday shopping early this year…

A few more brands to bookmark

As much as I stan Anecdote, I also like to ~diversify my portfolio~ when it comes to candles. A few other trendy brands I‘m burning lately:

  • Boy Smells: Gorgeous packaging and unique scent combos. A little pricier, but so worth it IMO.

  • D.S. & Durga: Indie fragrance brand with candles inspired by nature, travel, and music. The Portable Fireplace scent is my winter go-to.

  • Malin + Goetz: These apothecary-inspired candles double as chic decor. I‘m obsessed with the Cannabis scent – don‘t worry, it‘s legal!

  • Otherland: Female-founded brand with the most giftable candles. You can even build a custom 3-pack with your fave scents.

The Final Verdict

Alright friends, it‘s time to give you my official ruling on Anecdote Candles. In case you couldn‘t tell by my gushing review, I‘m thoroughly obsessed. Between the cheeky scents, cute packaging, and amazing throw, these babies are the total package.

I especially recommend Anecdote if you‘re looking for a memorable gift or a candle that really reflects your personality. Trust me, you‘ll get so many compliments and "Omg where is that from??" whenever you burn one.

At $24, they‘re definitely a splurge, but one I think is completely justified. These aren‘t your basic mall candles, people! Anecdote is bringing some much-needed humor and realness to the home fragrance game.

The only downside is that these sassy candles tend to sell out FAST. If you see one you like, add to cart immediately! Don‘t say I didn‘t warn you.

I hope this novel of a review was helpful and maybe even a little entertaining. Writing it definitely worked up my appetite – is it suddenly brunch o‘clock??

As always, feel free to hit me up in the comments with any burning (lol) questions! I‘m always happy to talk shop and bond over bougie candles.

Until next time,

Your Trusty Candle Connoisseur
