Italic Clothing Review: Why This Luxury Basics Brand is Worth the Membership

Have you ever fallen down a rabbit hole of online window shopping, filling your cart with cozy $300 cashmere crews and buttery $500 leather jackets only to guiltily close the tab? I‘ve been there more times than I care to admit.

As much as I appreciate quality fabrics and construction, my budget usually wins out over my bougie taste. But when I heard about Italic, a membership-based fashion brand that offers luxury-quality essentials at cost, I was intrigued. How could they offer designer-caliber goods at such attainable prices? I signed up to find out.

After a year of wearing Italic‘s uber-soft tees, skinny jeans, and silk blouses as a member, I‘m sharing my honest thoughts on the brand‘s quality, value, and shopping experience. I‘ll also give you a peek at some of my favorite Italic wardrobe heroes, so you can see how the products stack up to pricier versions. Let‘s dive in!

What Exactly is Italic?

Italic is a direct-to-consumer basics brand with a twist: they sell luxury-quality pieces (think 100% Grade-A cashmere, full-grain leather, premium Japanese denim) at the same prices their partner factories charge. That means you can score a silk blouse made in the same factory as Equipment for $65 instead of $200+.

How do they pull this off? Italic uses a membership model: for $60/year, you get access to shop their assortment of high-end clothing, accessories and home goods at cost. They‘re able to offer these prices by partnering directly with the manufacturers behind brands like Prada, Miu Miu, Helmut Lang, and Maison Margiela and cutting out the retail middleman.

When you shop on Italic‘s site, you won‘t see any brand names on the actual pieces – Italic‘s goods are unbranded to avoid markups. But each product page tells you the comparable designer brands that are made in the same factory, along with detailed specs on materials, construction, and garment measurements.

"We work with the same manufacturers as top designer labels, but we sell their goods without any added markups," Italic‘s CEO Jeremy Cai explained in an interview with Forbes. "By selling directly to consumers at cost, we‘re able to offer luxury-quality products at 50-80% less than traditional retail prices."

It‘s a unique model, but one that seems to be resonating with shoppers: Italic has grown to over 100,000 members since launching in 2018. The brand says members save an average of $250 per quarter compared to buying similar ready-to-wear pieces at retail prices.

My Honest Italic Clothing Review

I‘ve been an Italic member for about a year now, and in that time, I‘ve gradually replaced a lot of my mall brand and fast fashion basics with Italic‘s elevated versions. While I was drawn to the brand for their prices, I‘ve been consistently impressed with the quality and fit of the dozen or so pieces I‘ve tried.

To give you a sense of what Italic‘s offering and how the pieces stack up, I‘m sharing mini reviews of my most-worn pieces below. I‘ve also included comparison prices for similar products from other brands – get ready for some sticker shock!

Cashmere Crew – $75

Italic‘s $75 Cashmere Crew is hands down my most-worn sweater. Made of 100% Grade-A Mongolian cashmere (the same as $500+ sweaters from Vince or Theory), it is insanely soft and pill-resistant. I love the modest, versatile fit and lightweight warmth – perfect for layering or wearing on its own.

I have it in three colors I wear on repeat: classic black, pretty heather grey, and the perfect oatmeal beige. Every time I reach for it in my closet I can‘t believe it was only $75. It looks and feels like it could easily be 4 or 5 times that price! Total score.

Washed Silk Blouse – $65

This flowy, romantic silk blouse gives me total Equipment vibes for a fraction of the price. Cut from 100% silk crepe de chine, it has that fluid, effortless look that‘s so hard to find with synthetic dupes. I opted for the pretty champagne color, which is a dead ringer for a $268 Equipment blouse I seriously considered splurging on last year.

Fit-wise, I took my usual size small for a relaxed, drapey look. The quality is excellent – it‘s double-lined in the front so it‘s not at all sheer, and it washes beautifully. I love styling it half-tucked into jeans or tucked into a silk skirt for work. Gorgeous on its own and also layers well under blazers and cardigans.

Leather Moto Jacket – $300

I‘d been eyeing leather jackets for years but could never bring myself to pull the trigger on a 4-figure designer version. When I saw that Italic‘s Leather Moto Jacket was made in the same factory as All Saints and Vince and priced at just $300, I had to try it.

You guys – this jacket is the real deal. It‘s crafted from remarkably supple full-grain lambskin that molds to your body and gets better with each wear. The hardware has a nice weight to it and the zippers are so smooth. I love the slightly cropped, feminine silhouette and belted hem.

I‘ve been wearing this non-stop since it arrived with everything from floral dresses to sweaters to tees. The quality is absolutely on par with the All Saints moto I tried on last year for $500+. Such a wardrobe workhorse with a luxury feel.

Japanese Selvedge Slim Jeans – $95

I‘m super picky about jeans but these truly check all my boxes. Made of premium 12.5 oz Japanese selvedge denim, they have that thick, substantial feel and beautiful timeworn look of much pricier designer denim.

The slim straight silhouette is so leg-lengthening and the hint of stretch makes them insanely comfortable. I‘ve been wearing them nonstop since they arrived. They look like a $200+ pair of jeans but cost less than $100. Run, don‘t walk!

Grade-A Cashmere Scarf – $45

I didn‘t think I could be wowed by a scarf until I tried this one. Crafted from 100% Grade-A Mongolian cashmere, it is the softest, plushest scarf I‘ve ever felt. It‘s generously sized so you can style it multiple ways and adds the perfect touch of cozy luxury to any outfit.

I have it in classic black and rich charcoal and both look and feel far more expensive than their $45 price tag. Considering that 100% cashmere scarves start at around $150 – and can go up to $500+ for designer versions – this is an incredible steal. Italic also makes coordinating cashmere beanies that make a great gift set. These will be a staple in my cold weather wardrobe for years to come.

The Verdict

After a year of living in Italic‘s basics, I have to say I‘m impressed. The quality and construction of every piece I‘ve tried has been excellent, and the prices are unbeatable for the caliber of materials used.

I love that Italic offers a curated assortment of elevated essentials – they‘re really nailing that "capsule wardrobe" vibe. And as someone who appreciates quality fabrics and timeless design, it‘s so refreshing to find those things at an attainable price point.

The membership model is also an interesting twist that sets Italic apart from other direct-to-consumer basics brands. It adds an element of exclusivity and allows Italic to offer its products at cost. If you‘re someone who invests in a few high-quality basics per year, the $60 membership will easily pay for itself.

I also appreciate Italic‘s commitment to transparency about their manufacturing. Each product page lists detailed info on materials, garment measurements, and the factories Italic partners with, along with the comparable luxury brands made in the same facilities. It offers great context on the caliber of product you‘re getting for the price.

The only potential downside I could see is that Italic‘s assortment is fairly narrow compared to department stores or larger retailers. They‘re very focused on luxury essentials, so you won‘t find any ultra-trendy pieces or fast fashion equivalent items. But if you‘re in the market for a great cashmere sweater or wear-forever jeans, Italic is a fantastic place to look.

All in all, I‘ve been incredibly happy with my Italic purchases and the overall membership experience. The quality and value are unmatched, and I love having a trusted source for luxe basics to build my wardrobe around. I‘ve actually started recommending Italic to my friends and family looking to invest in fewer, better staples.

If you‘re someone who appreciates quality craftsmanship and materials but doesn‘t want to pay inflated retail markups, I highly recommend giving Italic a try. It‘s a fantastic way to access designer-level pieces at a fraction of the price. And with free shipping and returns, you really have nothing to lose.
