How to Double Your Sales in 2024 Without Working Twice as Hard
Are you tired of hearing the same, vague advice about working smarter, not harder? As a salesperson, you‘re already working pretty darn hard. But I‘m going to let you in on a simple mathematical formula that can help you double your sales this year, without doubling your effort. I call it the 2X Formula.
The 2X Formula: 3 Levers to 2X Your Sales
Here‘s the basic premise: there are three core levers you can adjust to grow sales:
- Number of customers
- Average sale size per customer
- Purchase frequency of existing customers
If you can increase each of those by just 26%, you will double your sales overall. Here‘s the math:
1.26(customers) x 1.26(average sale size) x 1.26(frequency) = 2X sales
Most salespeople make the mistake of trying to double one of those factors, like number of customers. But that‘s extremely difficult and can lead to burnout. The magic is in improving all three areas by just 26%. That‘s much more feasible.
Let‘s bring this to life with an example. Say you have 1,000 customers who spend an average of $1,000 once per year. Your revenue would be:
1,000 x $1,000 x 1 = $1 million
Now let‘s apply the 2X formula and grow each lever by 26%:
1,260 customers x $1,260 average sale x 1.26 purchase frequency (every ~9.5 months)
The math works out to:
1,260 x $1,260 x 1.26 = $2,000,376
You‘ve just doubled your sales, going from $1M to over $2M, by focusing on 26% improvements! No need to work twice as many hours or hire double the staff.
Getting 26% More Customers
Increasing your customer base by 26% may sound intimidating, but it doesn‘t have to be. Here are some of my favorite strategies:
• Referral programs: Incentivize current customers to refer their friends and colleagues. Offer a compelling referral bonus or discount.
• Micro-influencer marketing: Partner with micro-influencers in your niche to get your brand in front of new audiences. These influencers have high engagement rates and are more cost-effective than mega celebrities.
• Strategic partnerships: Form alliances with complementary businesses to cross-promote to each other‘s customers. You‘ll expand your reach and provide more value.
• Highten online visibility: Optimize your website for target keywords, create a strong social media presence, leverage paid search ads. Be easy to find when prospects are searching online.
• Host educational events: Attract potential customers by hosting webinars, workshops or classes related to your offerings. Provide valuable content and soft sell your products.
• Expand to new segments: Are there customer groups you‘re currently underserving or overlooking? Do market research to uncover opportunities, then adjust your marketing and offerings accordingly.
Boosting Average Sale Size by 26%
Getting each customer to spend 26% more on average is all about highlighting value. Some effective methods:
• Bundling: Package complementary products and services together. The convenience and savings of bundles can raise order values.
• Upselling: Train your sales team to upsell relevant upgrades, add-ons or premium versions during sales conversations. Tailor recommendations to each customer‘s needs.
• Raise prices: If your offerings are superior to competitors, a price hike could be justified. A 26% increase on a $100 product is just $26 extra. As long as you sell the value, many customers will gladly pay it.
• Financing: Offer payment plans to make large purchases more manageable. Breaking it into smaller monthly installments helps customers commit to buying more.
• Tripwire offers: Lure in customers with an attractive low-ticket offer, then present high-ticket items. A certain percentage of buyers will take you up on the premium product and boost sales.
• Pivot to quality: If you‘re known as the low-cost provider, rebrand to attract a higher-paying clientele. Upgrade your offerings, service and prices to shift to a premium position.
Increasing Purchase Frequency to Every 9.5 Months
Getting customers to buy from you every 9.5 months instead of every 12 requires staying top of mind and providing ongoing value. You can:
• Build a subscription model: Turn a one-time product into a recurring subscription or membership. Focus on convenience and exclusivity.
• Create a loyalty program: Reward your best customers with a well-designed loyalty program. Let them earn points to redeem for discounts. The goal is repeat purchases.
• Personalize recommendations: Use AI and customer data to serve up ultra-relevant product suggestions. Reach out personally with spot-on recommendations to drive faster sales cycles.
• Implement lifecycle marketing: Stay in touch with messaging tailored to each stage of the customer journey. The communications should provide value and naturally lead to the next sale.
• Retarget and reactivate: Bring lapsed customers back with retargeting ads and winback email campaigns. Special "we miss you" promotions can reignite buying.
• Become a one-stop shop: Expand your offerings so customers can get everything they need from you. The convenience factor will make you the first place they turn.
Bringing the 2X Formula to Life
Knowing the 2X Formula is one thing; actually implementing it is another. I recommend my 5-step approach:
-
Benchmark your current numbers for number of customers, average sale size and purchase frequency. You need a baseline.
-
Set 26% improvement goals for each lever and put them on a timeline, e.g. hit the new targets within 8 months.
-
Brainstorm strategies to reach your 26% goals. Choose a mix of proven tactics and innovative experiments.
-
Break each strategy into chunks and assign them to your team. Make sure everyone knows their numbers and responsibilities.
-
Meet regularly to review progress, optimize and troubleshoot. Hold everyone accountable and celebrate wins along the way.
You Can Totally Do This!
I know doubling your sales may seem daunting, but you have what it takes. Attack it from three sides – customers, sale size and frequency – and 2X is within reach.
Stay focused on providing incredible value and put in consistent effort. Start thinking in 26% increments. How can we get 26% more leads this month? What would convince customers to spend 26% more today? How can we compress the time between purchases by 26%?
Stick with this 2X Formula and you will see a serious sales surge this year, without burning yourself out. Here‘s to your 2X growth!
