Why I Love Gradients in Design (and Why You Should Too)
Gradients are having a major moment in web design. Whether it‘s the vibrant, 80s-inspired duotones of Spotify or the subtle, shimmery backgrounds of Apple, tech giants and hip startups alike are using gradients to add visual interest and depth to their digital experiences.
As a web designer, I‘ve fallen head-over-heels for gradients in recent years – and once you discover their power, I think you will too! Far from the gaudy, early 2000s WordArt days, today‘s gradients are sophisticated, versatile tools for crafting interfaces that engage and delight.
In this guide, I‘ll share why I believe gradients are a must-have in any modern web designer‘s toolkit. We‘ll cover the benefits of gradients in UI design, dissect some stellar examples from brands nailing the gradient game, and walk through super-practical tips you can apply to your own web projects.

The Power of Gradients in Modern Web Design
So what‘s the big deal with gradients? When applied with intention and restraint, gradients can elevate your design from flat to fantastic. Here are a few key benefits:
1. Gradients add visual interest & depth
One of the challenges of designing for screens is creating a sense of depth in a 2D environment. Unlike print design, we can‘t rely on physical textures or dimensionality.
That‘s where gradients come in. By subtly transitioning from one color to another, gradients create the illusion of light, shadow, and 3D space. They add visual complexity to an otherwise flat interface, making it more immersive and tactile.
In fact, research has found that web interfaces with visual complexity – like those using gradients – are perceived as more attractive, enjoyable, and stimulating compared to minimalist designs.
Just compare these two examples – one with a flat navy background, and one with an understated linear gradient:

The gradient version feels so much richer and more dynamic, without sacrificing sophistication.
2. Gradients guide the user‘s attention
In addition to being pleasing to the eye, gradients are functional tools for directing the user‘s focus to important content or actions.
For hero sections or feature images, a gradient overlay can create contrast and hierarchy, ensuring headlines and CTAs pop:

Or consider how Stripe draws attention to key stats by combining bold, colorful gradients with a strong grid layout:

The eye can‘t help but zero in on those juicy data points! The gradients function almost like a highlighter, emphasizing crucial information.
3. Gradients communicate brand personality
As web users, we process visuals faster than text – and color is one of the first things we perceive about a brand‘s digital presence. Whether you‘re going for playful, premium, high-tech, or anywhere in between, gradients are an effective way to infuse your interface with instant vibes.
Witness the dreamy, dusky gradients of meditation app Headspace, which beautifully evoke an atmosphere of calm and rest:

Meanwhile, Figma‘s electrifying, neon gradients scream cutting-edge creativity:

Same technique, totally different impact. The takeaway? Harnessing the emotional power of color through gradients can be a shortcut to earning user trust and affinity.
Gradient Techniques & Inspiration
Sold on the magic of gradients? Let‘s talk about how to wield them for maximum impact. While gradients are ultra-flexible, there are a few go-to techniques I swear by.
Subtle, low-contrast gradients for backgrounds
One of my favorite ways to use gradients is as an alternative to flat color backgrounds. By applying an understated gradient with colors in the same family and low contrast, you can add a hint of luster and dimensionality that makes the whole design feel more expressive.
Finance app Mint demonstrates this beautifully. Their muted, blue-green gradient backdrops manage to feel both friendly and trustworthy:

Here the gradients aren‘t the star of the show, but rather a supporting character that enhances the overall experience.
Bold, colorful gradients for illustrations
On the flip side, gradients can also be used to make a dramatic statement. Many brands are ditching realistic photos in favor of trendy, gradient-drenched illustrations – especially for hero sections and feature graphics.
These gradients tend to be higher contrast, spanning multiple color families for an eye-catching effect. Witness the lush, vibrant gradients of Slack‘s homepage graphics:

The vivid teal, purple, and magenta color palette instantly conveys a sense of energy and optimism. Paired with playful illustrations, the gradients help establish Slack‘s friendly, upbeat brand persona.
Gradients as an accent
You don‘t need to plaster gradients all over your interface for them to make an impact. Sometimes, a strategically-placed gradient accent is all you need to spice things up.
Productivity tool Notion uses gradients sparingly in their left-hand navigation to differentiate between sections:

It‘s a small touch, but it helps organize the content hierarchy and keeps the nav from feeling static.
Similarly, Stripe adds a pop of gradient to their credit card input field, creating a subtle sheen effect:

This lends a polished, premium feel to an otherwise ordinary web form. Little details like this can really elevate your UI!
Animated gradients for extra oomph
If you really want to turn heads, try animating your gradients! Adding a subtle gradient shift on hover or scroll can surprise and delight users.
Check out how Pitch gradually cycles through different gradient colors in their hero section:

The slow, mesmerizing shift adds dynamism and keeps the eye engaged.
Animated gradients can also guide users through a linear flow, like IBM‘s evolving case study gradient:

As the user scrolls, the gradient progresses through different color stages, creating a sense of narrative and momentum.
Of course, animated gradients should be used judiciously to avoid overwhelming the user. Keep animations smooth, subtle, and purposeful for best results.
Choosing & Customizing Gradients
By now, I bet you‘re stoked to start playing with gradients in your own designs! But before you dive headfirst into a Skittles bag of color combos, let‘s talk strategy.
Aligning gradients with your color palette
As with any color choice, gradients should feel harmonious with your overall palette and brand personality. A good rule of thumb is to choose 2-3 swatches from your existing palette as the basis for your gradient.
You can also use tools like Coolors or Adobe Color to explore gradient palettes and find hues that complement your brand colors.
Choosing gradient styles
There are a few common gradient styles to choose from:
- Linear: Colors flow from one to another in a straight line, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally
- Radial: Colors emerge from a central point and blend outward in a circular shape
- Conic: Colors sweep around a center point like a wheel or pie chart
Which style you choose largely depends on the shape and orientation of the element you‘re applying the gradient to. As a general rule, linear gradients work well for rectangular elements like buttons or hero images, while radial gradients are better suited for circular elements like avatars or icons.
You can also layer multiple gradients for more complex effects, like a two-tone metallic sheen.
Accessibility & contrast considerations
As with any design choice, it‘s crucial to consider accessibility when working with gradients. Poor contrast between text and background can make your content difficult to read, especially for users with visual impairments.
The WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) recommend a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for larger text (18pt+). You can use tools like WebAIM‘s Contrast Checker to test your gradients and ensure adequate contrast.
If you‘re placing text over a gradient, opt for simple, high-contrast color pairings with plenty of light/dark contrast. Avoid placing text over the transition point where two colors meet, as this can make the text harder to read.
It‘s also a good idea to provide a solid background color fallback for older browsers that may not support gradients. You can do this easily with a CSS declaration like:

background-image: linear-gradient(135deg, #7158e2, #3ec7e0);
}
That way, everyone can experience your design as intended, regardless of their device or browser.
Creating Gradients with UI Tools
Now for the fun part – actually making your own gradients! While you can certainly code gradients by hand with CSS, I prefer to use visual tools for quicker iteration and experimentation.
Photoshop
Trusty old Photoshop is still my go-to for mocking up gradient-heavy designs. To create a basic linear gradient in PS:
- Create a new layer and select the Gradient Tool (G).
- In the Options bar, click the gradient preview to open the Gradient Editor.
- Choose your desired colors by double-clicking the color stops below the gradient bar. You can also adjust the midpoint between colors by dragging the diamond icon above the bar.
- Click and drag on your canvas to draw the gradient. Hold Shift while dragging to snap to a perfectly horizontal, vertical or 45-degree angle.
- Customize your gradient further with blend modes, opacity and layer styles.

Figma
For interface design, Figma has become my new best friend – and their gradient tools are top-notch! Here‘s how to whip up a gradient in Figma:
- Create a new shape and select the Fill tool.
- Choose the Linear or Radial gradient option from the dropdown.
- Click the gradient stops to select your color. You can also type in exact hex codes or use the eyedropper tool to sample colors from elsewhere in your design.
- Drag the round handle in the center to rotate your gradient angle. Drag the square handles on either end to adjust the gradient‘s start and end points.
- To add a new color, simply click anywhere along the gradient slider. To remove a color, drag it off the slider.

Pitch‘s website is a smorgasbord of juicy gradients, from the undulating waves of the hero section to the colorful feature illustrations. The gradients feel cohesive thanks to a consistent jewel-toned palette with punchy contrast.
Chobani

Chobani injects warmth and playfulness into their product configurator with cheerful gradients. Bright splashes of orange, pink and red make the experience feel fun and appetizing.
Mixpanel

For their 2022 product announcement, Mixpanel went all-in on futuristic, neon gradients. Combining glitchy textures, 3D elements and acid hues, the design feels cutting-edge and daring – perfect for a disruptive tech brand.
Headspace

In contrast, Headspace‘s soothing sunset gradients evoke a sense of calm and relaxation, reinforcing their product promise. The muted, analogous color palette feels sophisticated and cohesive.
Gradients for the Win
I think we can all agree: Gradients are a UI designer‘s secret weapon for crafting memorable, emotive digital experiences. When applied with restraint and purpose, they can add depth, guide attention, and communicate brand personality – all without sacrificing accessibility.
